Kathleen (Kiehl) Sauer, 94, of Mechanicsville, passed away Jan. 15, 2019, surrounded by her family. Funeral: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at First United Methodist Mechanicsville followed by burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services in Mount Vernon.
She is survived by her husband, John; children, Debra (Michael) Freeman, Jane (Lee) Peters and John (Ann) Sauer; grandchildren, Jennifer (Nate), Adam (Brianna), Steven (Lacey), Johnathan and Matthew; and great-grandchildren, Sarah, Rachael, Morgan, Addison and Charlie.
Kathleen was born in Hulett, Wyo., to Walter and Opal (Johnson) Kiehl on Oct. 30, 1924. She graduated from Mechanicsville High School with the Class of 1942 before going for her bachelor's of elementary education at Cornell College. Kathleen taught children in Tipton and Mechanicsville while raising the three that she and John adopted in May of 1963.
She was active in the Lions Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Bridge Club, and as chairwoman of the Library Board. For years she served as a leader and teacher at First United Methodist Church Mechanicsville. Kathleen was a wonderful daughter and loved reading and needlework in the little spare time she had.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
