Janis J. (Grafenberg) Corkery, 80, of Robins, formerly of Independence, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017, at Emery Place Living & Memory Care Center in Robins.
Janis was born April 24, 1937, in West Union, Iowa, the daughter of Felix J. and Virginia "Vergie" E. (Fels) Grafenberg. She attended the Dover No. 9 School in rural West Union and graduated from West Union High School in 1955. She married James Matthew Corkery on June 6, 1959, in Fayette. She worked for Farm Bureau Insurance Co. and the Interstate Power Co. After moving to Independence, she worked for 25 years as a secretary for Independence Community Schools until her retirement in 1995. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, spending time with her grandchildren and having coffee with the retired school secretaries.
She is survived by her children, Brian (Julie) Corkery, Iowa City, Angie (Loren) Pink, Independence, and Deb (Kevin) Bundy, Cedar Rapids; her seven grandchildren, Anna and Emma Corkery, Austin (Bre) and Spencer Pink, Kyle, Daniel and Jayson Bundy; a sister, Marilyn Larson, Marion; a sister-in-law, Myrnie Corkery, Elk River, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
Janis was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James M. Corkery, Dec. 9, 2016; a sister, Shirley Kamm; and many other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with the Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will follow in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. A rosary service will be held at 4 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
