Kathryn E. Nereim of Iowa City passed away Monday, Oct. 3, 2016, at Bickford Senior Living, Iowa City. A private graveside service will take place in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Foundation, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or Care Initiatives Hospice.
Kathryn was born in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Austin and Lola (Fildes) Peterson. She was united in marriage to Tom Nereim on Sept. 19, 1943, in Des Moines. He preceded her in death on May 2, 2011.
Kathryn and Tom owned and operated Universal Climate Control Inc., which they founded on July 1, 1961. For over 25 years, they also owned the University Athletic Club. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and University Club. Kathryn was an avid supporter of Iowa athletics and Hancher Auditorium. She enjoyed golf, bowling and bridge.
Kathryn is survived by her two daughters, Jan (Bryan) Lawler and Jillaine (Lawrence) Wonick, both of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Heather Lawler of Kansas City, Mo., Ashley Lawler of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Corey (Mallory) Wonick of North Liberty; one great-grandchild, Brynn Wonick; and a sister-in-law, Jean Peterson of Iowa City.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom; and two siblings, Robert Peterson and Dolores Cavanaugh.
