I am a Korean War veteran and had the privilege of being on the May 21 Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
My first thank-you goes to the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight people who perform most efficiently.
On the morning of departure, members of the Cedar Rapids Police Department and their chief of police were there to load boxes onto the airplane, which was our breakfast on board en route to D.C. Thank you for a job well done.
The next point of interest was the D.C. area people who were at the Reagan Airport as a welcome party and the D.C. police, who furnished two motorcycle police to escort our bus caravan all day until we finished at the airport. Our first stop on the tour was at the World War II memorial.
Our arrival back in Cedar Rapids was an awesome event. When we walked in, being overwhelmed with having a band playing, singers, the Knights of Columbus officers dressed in their uniforms and seeing the residents who had come out at that time of late evening saying 'thank you for your service.'' This was almost beyond description, it was so nice.
A message to veterans: You are missing the greatest adventure in your life. The tours are well organized by Honor Flight staff and volunteers. It is beyond comprehension. I am thankful that I was able to live long enough to experience this fine event.
