A veteran facilities staffer at Kirkwood Community College was recently honored for his work in expanding and improving the college's tree population.
The Iowa Urban and Community Forestry Council and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources – Forestry Bureau saluted Mike Martin as an Outstanding Professional of the Year.
The award was presented to Martin at the 20th Annual Community Forestry Awards Luncheon, held at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines April 6, 2010.
Martin is Kirkwood's grounds supervisor and has served in that role since 1998. His award citation noted that he “has improved the campus grounds with his professional horticulture knowledge.” Martin is responsible for the lawn, perennial and annual displays, shrubs and trees on the Kirkwood campus.
In comments accompanying the award, the groups recognized Martin's “years of tireless effort” to protect many of Kirkwood's trees during new building and expansion. “Additionally, he provides demonstration opportunities on campus for those studying horticulture or environmental issues,” officials added. “Mike Martin is an outstanding example of Iowa's community forestry professionals, by enhancing our forest resources. The trees he has planted and maintained will benefit the Kirkwood and Cedar Rapids for future generations.”
Kirkwood officials also credit Martin as a chief reason the tree populations on the campus are a showcase of Iowa's natural heritage. Every native tree species in the state is represented on the 680 acres of the college's main campus.
