Students need a civics education

To the editor:
Better civics education for our high school students is an important first step in creating more civically engaged citizens.
I have been involved in political campaigns and I think that if people had a better understanding of how our government works they would be more likely to participate in the political process.
It is good to see an organization, such as the Joe Foss Institute, which has a history of working to prepare students to be engaged citizens, bring needed attention to this issue through the Civics Education Initiative. I hope the legislature will act on this next year.
