Deloris Hickey Middlebrooks, of Reno, Nev., passed away Oct. 15, 2017, after a lingering illness.
Born to Harland and Rosa Hickey 86 years ago in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she grew and took an interest in nursing. She received a BSN from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, and then traveled to San Francisco, Calif., to earn a MSN at the University of California-Berkley. She finally received her doctorate from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.
Dr. Deloris Middlebrooks served her community for 57 years as a nurse and nursing instructor. She was awarded the Nevada Nurses Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
Her husband, Johnny Middlebrooks, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, James; her daughter, Kathleen; her sister, Carole Hilmer; several nieces and nephews; and many friends very dear to her.
She enjoyed bluebirds, people, dancing, kolaches, fondue and singing the old hymns at church.
Deloris and her children would like to thank all the friends, family, nurses, doctors and caregivers for all the support and assistance they provided in the final stages of this life's journey.
Memorial services for Dr. Middlebrooks will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 6695 Mae Anne Ave., Reno, at 11 a.m. Nov. 11.
