Karl T. "Butch" Kurt, 78, of Cascade, passed away at 4:50 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Friends and relatives of Karl may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, where a prayer service will be held at 2:30 p.m. and a KC rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Services for Karl will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade.
Karl was born May 3, 1939, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of George and Barbara (Weber) Kurt. He received his education in the former St. Mary's School in Cascade. On Sept. 19, 1970, he was united in marriage to Larita Horsfield at St. John's Catholic Church in Placid, Iowa. He was a dedicated beef producer and crop farmer. He farmed all his life in the rural Cascade area. He lost a leg in 1975 and continued to farm. He loved to play cards and visit with his friends and family. He was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, Cascade Knights of Columbus Council 930, Jones County Cattlemen's Association and the Farm Bureau Association.
He is survived by his wife, Larita Kurt; two children, Jolene (Doug) Kramer of Monticello, and their children, Hunter, Bo and Karle Kramer, and Michael Kurt of Prairieburg, and his children, Christine and Colleen Kurt; one brother, Ronald (Pat) Kurt of Cascade; and sisters- and brothers-in-law, Vernon Becker of Hopkinton, Evadeen (Allan) Strang of Cascade, JoAnn Horsfield of Monticello, Daniel (Colleen) Horsfield of Cascade and Clarence Urban of Epworth.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Steve Kurt, in infancy, the Rev. Allan Kurt and Ralph P. (Lorraine) Kurt of Monticello; two sisters, Wilma (Clifford) Priebe and Sister Lucy Kurt; and brothers- and sisters-in-law, Eleanor Urbain, Edward Meier, Mae Becker and William Horsfield.
