Vera Joan Hackett was born March 23, 1932, to Harvey and Ruth Hinkel Toutsch. Joan graduated from Fayette Community School in 1949. She attended Upper Iowa University. Dale W. Hackett and Joan were married on May 30, 1951, in Fayette. Three children were born to this union: Chris, Kim and Greg. Before moving to Anamosa in July 1959, Joan and Dale lived in Arlington, Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.
Through the years Joan was active in the Anamosa United Methodist Church, Anamosa Library board (23 years), Ophelian Study Group and PEO (since 1967). She worked at the REC for several years. Joan loved to cook and bake. Being an avid reader, there were always books in Joan's life; playing cards and visiting with friends were two other special pastimes.
