White, Kaye N.
Kaye N. White, 90, of Independence, died Wednesday afternoon, March 3, 2010, at her home at Prairie Hills Assisted Living Center in Independence following a short illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with the Rev. Don Plamondon officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, where a rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. and parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
Kaye was born Aug. 1, 1919, in Kirriemuir Alberta Canada, the daughter of John and Kate (Lupino) Mazur. At the age of 3 she came to the Independence area, where she attended Byron Township Country School and graduated from the Winthrop High School in 1937. She received a teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught in the Buchanan County schools. On Aug. 19, 1941, she was united in marriage to John A. White in Independence. The couple farmed north of Independence. Kaye was also employed in the food service department of Peoples Memorial Hospital and in the deli at Isham's Grocery.
She was a member of St. John's Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed making ice cream rolls, cakes, and playing cards.
Survivors include eight children, John White, Independence, Jim White, Stanwood, Judy (Terry) Thiessen, Winthrop, Jerry White, West Branch, Ill., Joe White, Shell Rock, Jeff (Luci) White, Independence, Janet (Len) Billerbeck, Cedar Rapids, and Jackie (Jim) Engelbrecht, Mount Vernon; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Jane Diltz of Phoenix.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Kate Mazur; daughter, Patricia White; brothers, John, Tom and Joe Mazur; and sisters, Josephine Decker, Ann Buelow and Agnes Wilson.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Kay White Memorial fund, at Security State Bank, 231 First St. E., Independence, IA 50644.
