Russell was born May 3, 1937, in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Bertha Hocker and Charles L. Kinzenbaw. He graduated from Ladora High School and served in the U.S. Army for two years. He was united in marriage to Dianne Lindley and later divorced. To this union, one son, Jesse Kinzenbaw, was born. Russell was a great storyteller who went into much detail. He was all about rodeoing and his years spent on a ranch in South Dakota. After retirement, he worked for Heartland Co-op and his favorite job of helping with fall harvest for Dwight and Denise Heitman.
