George B. Irish, 76, passed away peacefully on Aug. 7, 2015, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Me-morial Park Funeral Home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, with Pastor Jim Coyle offici-ating. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors.
George was born March 23, 1939, in Shellsburg, to Joel and Juanita (Salem) Irish, and graduated in 1957 from Shellsburg High School. George was an Army veteran serving our country from 1958 to 1964. He married Sheryl Ann Wehde on Sept. 21, 1972, in Las Vegas, Nev.
George was an entrepreneur who dabbled in many things, but excelled in the restaurant business. He owned many Country Kitchen restaurants and Irish's Pine Inn. After retirement he worked part-time at Menard's.
He was an avid fisherman, bowler, morel mushroom hunter and an excellent cook.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Sheryl Ann Irish; son, Brad (Kris) Irish of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Becky (Augie) Sevart of Chattanooga, Tenn., Deb Irish of Clearwater, Fla., and Cassandra (Shannon) Irish-Meek of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Helen (Dean) Schirm of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Bernice (Leonard) Fox of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Dennis (Diane) Irish of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; and many other extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joel Irish and Juanita and Cy Bergen; a sister, Dorothy Pingel; brothers, Max and Joel Irish; and his in-laws, Russell and Lillian Wehde.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha for their work and support these last few weeks.
George will be greatly missed as a loving husband, father, brother and friend to all who knew him.
