Ireland, Stuart G.
Stuart G. Ireland, 77, of Wyoming, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 26, 2011, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse, Wis. A celebration of his life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at Zion American Lutheran Church in Wyoming. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Lahey Funeral Home in Wyoming, where a Masonic service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Smithtown Cemetery, rural Lost Nation, with military honors.
Stuart George Lee Ireland was born Feb. 8, 1934, in Monticello, Iowa, the son of George and Alberta (Starry) Ireland. He graduated from Wyoming High School in 1951. He married Edith Becker on Feb. 26, 1955, in Lost Nation. He served in the U.S. Navy.
Stuart was a mechanic and parts manager at Beidlers Implement in Maquoketa, retiring in 1999. Stuart also drove school bus and in earlier years, worked for the Jones County Road Department.
He served as mayor in Wyoming for 20 years and on the Wyoming City Council for 16 years. He was the original organizer of the Midland Ambulance Service and the Calkins Commission, and since 1973, was chairman of Jones County Landfill.
He was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church, American Legion Wyoming Post 259, Masonic Lodge Zealous No. 435 of Oxford Junction, and the Order of Eastern Star Gardner Chapter 374 of Maquoketa.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Ireland of Holmen, Wis.; three children, Linda Ireland of Monticello, Cathy (Ralph) Adamson of LaGrange, Ill., and Stuart W. (Shari) Ireland of Holmen, Wis.; six grandchildren; two sisters, Kay Momsen of Orland Park, Ill., and Georgia Ann Madden of New Lenox, Ill.; two half brothers, David Ireland of Milwaukee, Wis., and Richard White of Missouri; and nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Russell in 1989.
