Martena M. Soukup, 91, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully at Olimpia's Home Care, Phoenix, on Friday, March 21, 2014. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, at All Saints Catholic Church by the Rev. John R. Flaherty. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Papich-Kuba Funeral Home East, 1228 Second St. SE, where a rosary begins at 5 p.m.
Martena is survived by her son, James "Jim" M. Soukup and wife Shari of Desert Hills, Ariz.
She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Edna Gelski; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; daughter, Kimberly A. Baker; parents, Paul and Esther (Gilbride) Gelski; sisters, Esther Belcove, Mary Ann Graw and Annette Ferrand; and brothers, Henry, Frank, Charlie and Jim Gelski.
Martena was born Jan. 14, 1923, in Washington, Iowa, and had been a resident of the Cedar Rapids area since she was three years old. She married Ernest W. Soukup on Sept. 11, 1947 in Cedar Rapids. Ernest died May 16, 1994. Martena worked at Wilson and Company Meat Packing Plant for several years and after that she devoted her time to taking care of her family.
Martena was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.
Contributions in Martena's memory may be given to All Saints Catholic Church and Hospice of the Valley.
