Dowling topples Xavier in rematch

WEST DES MOINES - Cedar Rapids Xavier may have turned up the knob on its level of defensive intensity, but it wasn't sustained long enough to take down the No. 1-ranked team in Class 4A.
In a rematch of last year's 4A state championship game, the now-3A Saints lost to West Des Moines Dowling, 24-2, last night at Valley Stadium.
In his debut as Xavier's starting quarterback, sophomore Bryce Schulte was 4-of-15 passing for 26 yards and two interceptions. Drops in key points of the game stalled the Saints' passing attack.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Maroons struck first with a 14-yard touchdown scamper by sophomore Cole Deskin. After a Dowling field goal, senior Charlie Schulte snagged a 42-yard pass from senior quarterback - and Iowa football commit - Ryan Boyle.
The Saints' defense bowed up and stopped Boyle in his own end zone for a safety with 11:02 left in the third quarter, but inconsistency on offense didn't allow Xavier to draw within 15 points. An aggressive running game by the Maroons eventually led to a 3-yard touchdown run by senior Isaiah Patton.
Dowling senior Dante Campero made his presence known in the secondary, recording both interceptions. He returned the second pick for 28 yards in the fourth quarter, effectively stopping a driving Saints offense.
A diverse offensive attack, as well as 14 first downs, forced the Saints' defense to remain on the field the majority of the game.
