Ferentz radio: Only singles, standing room available for UW game

OK, the UI Twitter account got at me after the radio show. Here's a ticket update for the Wisconsin game:

Sorry I'm late. I underestimated the drive back from IC.

A couple of items:

-- Tickets remain for all three remaining home games. Even Wisconsin, which surprises me quite a bit.

-- Tom from Moline correctly credited Dolph for calling the shot with the TEs last week. If you remember, Dolph pretty much began the show with a call for more TE (not more cowbell, more TE). So hey, good job by Gary Dolphin.

-- Iowa women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder was on. I was on my way in and trying to fire up the computer to get this going, so I missed the majority. I covered coach Bluder's first season for The Gazette. She's also been on On Iowa Live. She's pure class. Would love to have her on OIL again.

-- Speaking of On Iowa Live, we got a shout out!!! From Mike (I think Mike from DBQ). Mike's point was the mention of OSU's D-line talking about getting beaten by Iowa's O-line. It did, for the first half anyway. We'll never know about the second. The game kind of bent away from OL strength.

-- Adam from PHX asks about the lessons the defense could've learned last weekend.

KF: There are some similarities. The style of attack aligns with NW and ISU. Kain Colter and Braxton Miller also can make dynamic plays. Have to keep good leverage and concentrate. Couple times, Iowa let Miller out. Sometimes, he just got out.

They're talking about the Terrelle Pryor play that Miller made last week. It was definitely a Pryor play (Ott didn't contain on the backside).

-- Tommy from Des Moines want to know . . . Never mind, he thinks Ohio State is overrated. Wants to know KF's opinion and says he's getting off the phone.

Dolph thanked Tommy for getting off the phone and noted his classic pot-stirring technique.

Anyway, Ohio State has won 19 straight games. The defense might not be national-title caliber, but Tommy is wide left, once again.

-- General Big Ten chatter now.

Talking the Badgers. KF: They're a very good football team. Notes running game and Abberderis.

-- This is the ANF game. Bring canned food. Donate. Be generous with your bounty. It's the only way to live.

-- Jerome wants to know where the TEs went in the second half. Dolph rips Jerome for missing Duzey's 85-yard TD reception. C'mon, Jerome, keep up, man.

-- More TE from texter Regan: More Duzey at wideout: Do that occasionally, but not an awful lot, KF said.

More on Duzey, Dolph wants to know. Calls him likable.

KF: Came to camp here. Prep coach has Iowa ties. Thought he might be a great TE or a DE. Big frame. Great family. Been fun to watch him. Not totally shocked by what he did. Can develop. George Kittle is the same kind of player. Down the road, have a chance to be great players.

-- Back to the phones.

Mike in Bluegrass loved the run-pass ratio in the first half. Mike thinks the run went away in the second half and it sure did. Wants to see Daniels, calls him smashmout. (As opposed to Weisman, the finesse back?)

KF: Can't get Canzeri on the field. Only one RB. No Weisman injury. He's OK. Fourth quarter flipped because the D couldn't get off the field, pure and simple. Wants to get Daniels on the field more.

Hey guys, Weisman is the running back until he's not.

-- KF: One thing we did well was third down conversions. Much better this year in general. Passes are passes (??). Duzey's 85 was off a run formation. That second half, OSU got it going offensively. TOP swung and patience went out the window.

-- Jim from Pochahontas (home of Larry Bittner): Something about his health.

Glad Jim is doing well.

-- Kurt in Newhall mentions a signed ball that KF sent to an auction for a cancer patient. The gentleman passed away and left three kids. Very sad. Condolences to the family.

Kurt question on punt return. KF: Not where we want to be special teams-wise. Need to develop passing attack. Diversify running game. Stop big plays on defense.

-- Dolph mentions every kind of farmer. Hey, my grandfather was a farmer in Wisconsin. Imagine if he wouldn't have gone to work with the county extension. I'd be a farmer in Wisconsin. Some of you probably wish I were. I'm looking at you, Mike Miller! (I'm kidding Mike. He's a good guy.)

-- Pat Angerer mention. I always vote for Pat Angerer.

-- Talking about all the great farm kids who played at Iowa. Dang, there are a ton of them. They're just mentioning the ones who played in color. This promotion should reach back a little farther. I'm guessing they're leaving off a ton of players from farms who played before every game was on TV.

-- Jerry from somewhere makes good comments. Question on Mike Hardy. KF: Continued to take steps "each of the way along." Started to come together last spring. He's continued and now here he is, a starter for Dominic Alvis, who'll miss this week with a back injury. KF mentions Nate Meier.

Duane from Hiawatha, which is by CR. Asks KF is he knows about the spread offense. Everyone thinks you gotta do the spread. Duane likes the pro style. He's seen a lot of versatility from Iowa's offense, mentions the three-TE set and playing the "big boy" game. (Sharp observation by Duane). OSU players made about a half dozen plays and that was the difference in the game.

KF: Mentions Oregon. Has advantages on recruiting front and takes advantage. Contrasts that with Stanford, which is more like Iowa.

Basically, you are where you are, unless you're Ohio State. You can be Oregon at Ohio State, you can't be Oregon at Iowa (that's me saying that, BTW, don't go off on KF).

-- A.J., the guy from Clear Lake who cleans the pig pens, is on. Nice comments. KF seemed to appreciate his observations. Twitter folks have told me he's a good coach and a better guy.

-- NW has a guard from KF's high school in Pittsburgh.

-- Dolph talking about NW's OL.

KF: They're diverse offensively, so it takes work. Brandon Vitable getting mention. The LT is also veteran.

-- Dolph on NW QB.

KF: It's unusual to see a team with two QBs and see it work this well. Colter accurate passer this year. Roll two guys. Not sure he knows the strategy, but gets points and yards.

-- Treyvon Green and other RBs mentioned. Vitale the TE.

KF: Trumpy has been good for them. Green was great against WMU. No. 8 (Buckley) is busting on the scene. More like No. 5 (Venric Mark). Good WR corps. Catch ball and great job with perimeter blocking.

-- NW visited the Rams when the "greatest show on turf" was going on. High tempo. Throw the ball all over the place. Makes teams defend every blade of grass.

-- Dave in Bettendorf has a couple items. Wants Kinnick magic to return. Liked how the RBs were rotated. The three senior LBs will be key last five games, vs NW and crossing patterns.

KF: Wants to win for the fans. That's our job. The LBs need to defend the diverse offense. Suits Iowa to have all three in the game.

-- Larry is in Knoxville (Peace Tree Brewery). Asks about the tough schedule, teams having a bye week before playing Iowa.

KF: It's interesting. Made that bye week observation during the summer. KF doesn't understand the Big Ten computer. The B1G always blames scheduling flukes on the computer. (I love this, BTW. Great work, Big Ten. Unintentional humor.) Can't worry about things you can't control.

-- Worthington Steve checks in. Says hi to Luxemburg's No. 1 Hawk fan Bobo!!

Question about who decides on who starts, namely he's talking punter (not happy with Connor Kornbrath, obviously).

Marques Simmons' dad is principal. Teaches democracy, but doesn't practice it.

KF: D-line coaches don't talk about QBs or punter, but KF welcomes the input. Decisions are made pretty much by position coaches and coordinators. KF rarely uses the veto card. They're always talking about players and what they're doing. Punter is an interesting position. Sort of a dying art. Not a lot of them out there anymore (wait, what? everyone needs a punter, no?). Mentions a Marv Cook punt. Marshall Koehn is the backup punter. Believes Kornbrath will develop into a fine B1G punter in time.

I hope Bobo is doing well.

-- Dolph wants a good start and he's right. Last week's couldn't have gone better.

KF: Gotta sustain it. Potent O from NW.
