Gulick, Carl Edgar
Carl Edgar Gulick, 92, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at his home in Circleville, Ohio, formerly of Orient, Ohio. Calling hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral Home, 151 East Main St., Circleville. Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Chaplain Jim Ferrell and Pastor Sue McClelland officiating. Burial, with military honors to follow, at Muhlenberg-Darbyville Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Lorie Craig Gulick; daughters, Carlynn Breakfield of Sabina, Ohio, Judy Schillinger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jean (Ken) Greene of Circleville, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Gary (Linda Pelham) Breakfield of Florida, Lori Breakfield (Dean) Luttrell of Leesburg, Ohio, Lance (Debbie Howell) Greene of North Carolina, Ryan Greene of Clintonville, Ohio, Julie Schillinger (Jeremy) Blackwell of Iowa, Heidi Schillinger (Jason) Stribiak of Illinois and Anne Schillinger (Chris) York of Iowa; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Gulick of Orient; niece, Jan Shannon; and nephews, Steve and Glenn Gulick.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy B. and Velma Gochenour Gulick; first wife, Jane Lyons Gulick; sons-in-law, Thomas Breakfield and Henry Schillinger; and sister-in-law, Ruth Gulick.
Carl was born March 26, 1917, in Pickaway County, Ohio. He was a 1935 graduate of Scioto Township School in Commercial Point, Ohio, attended OSU, and was a member of the freshman wrestling team. Carl was a self-employed farmer and resident of Pickaway County most of his life. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served all his tour in the U.S. During his tour of duty he played baseball on an Army baseball team, playing against Joe DiMaggio, Murders Row, Dunning, Ruffing, West, Hernandez and Stevens.
After the war ended, he was drafted by the Tulsa Oilers farm club, affiliated with the Chicago Cubs, which he declined and returned to Pickaway County. For many years, he played semipro basketball and baseball; also played fast pitch softball. In 1989, he was inducted into the Ohio Amateur Association Softball Hall of Fame. He played many years for the Top Hat softball team of Circleville and the Ashville Reds baseball team.
