Leola M. Baierlein, 94, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2016. Visitation from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Westminster Presbyterian Church. She will be laid to rest next to her husband, Gene Baierlein, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery immediately following the funeral.
Leola Maize was born Oct. 13, 1921, to William and Mary (Victoria Maize Powell) in rural Missouri. She was united in marriage to Gene Otto Baierlein in Alton, Ill., on April 15, 1951. They moved to Quincy, Ill., then to Florissant, Mo., and finally to Cedar Rapids in 1964. Gene Baierlein passed away four years later. The family remained in Cedar Rapids. Leola earned her GRI-CRS designation and was a realtor for 24 years, retiring from Iowa Reality in 2002 as a member of the "Million Dollar Club." She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), the Cedar Rapids Symphony Guild and Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. Leola was an avid reader, a competitive bridge player and she loved ballroom dancing, knitting, opera, golf, gardening and Pearl, her cat. She valued her time with family and friends.
Leola is survived by her two daughters, Deborah (Gary) Kristiansen and Diane Baierlein-Brooks (Philip Brooks), both of Cedar Rapids; her grandchildren, Cory (Sue) Gardner, Adam (Tonya) Kristiansen, Amanda Brooks, Michael Brooks and Olivia Brooks; four great-grandchildren, Cortes, Austin, Drew and Mason, all who will miss her dearly.
