MELVIN EUGENE SCHIRM

Melvin Eugene Schirm, 87, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018, at St. Luke's Hospital. A visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel Stateroom. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha with visitation starting at 10 a.m.
Melvin was born Jan. 26, 1931, to Lawrence and Marie (Stolte) Schirm. Mel graduated from Wilson High School in 1949 and was employed at Link Belt Speeder until joining the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1951 to 1953. He returned to work at Link Belt until the plant closed. He attended Kirkwood Community College, receiving an associate degree. He was a courier for Weland Lab until retiring in 1996.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 63 years, Annetta; sons, Steven (Kimberly), Thomas (Kathy) and Michael (Madonna); five grandchildren, James, Dru, Chris, Ben and Sarah; sister, Joyce Twachtmann; brother, Russell (Pat); brothers-in-law, Herb (Betty) Tholen, John (Kathy) Tholen and Robert Jennings; sisters-in-law, Dorothea Ede, Elnora Husmann and Ann Tholen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert; brothers-in-law, Walt Twachtmann, William Ede, Robert Husmann, Harold Tholen and Bernhardt Tholen; sister-in-law, Patricia Jennings; and an infant brother.
He enjoyed reading, wildlife and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. They were the light of his life!
