Coralville man arrested for allegedly swinging at deputy

Jan. 31, 2012 11:15 am
A Coralville man arrested early this morning on suspicion of public intoxication, his fifth such charge since 2004, now faces an assault on a peace officer charge after deputies said he swung at them after being booked into the Johnson County Jail.
Curtis Allen Heumphreus, 28, was arrested at 12:39 a.m. in North Liberty after officers found him on a public street, smelling of alcohol, according to a criminal complaint.
After being booked into the Johnson County Jail in Iowa City, Heumphreus is accused of expressing hatred for the North Liberty officer who arrested him. He started “shadow boxing” in his cell and punching the steel bunk bed, according to the complaint.
Heumphreus told deputies, “Don't come in here, don't come into my cell,” and when asked to cooperate and come with a deputy to a holding cell, Heumphreus said, “You can't make me,” according to the complaint.
The deputy stepped into the cell, and Heumphreus took a fighting stance, clenching his fists, the deputy reported. Heumphreus swung at the deputy before he was taken to the ground, according to the complaint.
As a result of the altercation, a deputy suffered pain in his left ankle and “found the action to be offensive,” the complaint states.
