No-contact contact for Bundrage
Apr. 12, 2015 12:26 am
AMES - Quenton Bundrage doesn't remember how he got off the line of scrimmage. All that stands out is looking the pass into his arms, followed by contact.
Bundrage, fitted with a green no-contact jersey during the Iowa State spring game, ran along the sideline and reached for a pass from Sam Richardson. As the ball fell into his hands Saturday, the inadvertent contact came.
Although the play happened on the same field where he tore an ACL just eight months ago, Bundrage didn't have his mind on his knee and was just happy to be back in he lineup.
'Not only me just being out there with my teammates, but also being out there showing the fans I'm back to my regular self,” he said.
Bundrage was injured on the fourth play of the first game last season. He caught four passes for 39 yards Saturday and is poised to shed the no-contact jersey before fall camp.
Although Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads said Bundrage might have looked 'a tad bit gun shy,” that doesn't discredit what he showed.
'When we (tell him he's 100 percent full-go), I think his concentration at catching every ball will be what it needs to be,” Rhoads said. 'His explosiveness off the line of scrimmage, (and there's) certainly no decrease in his speed, is what you're happy to see coming off an ACL surgery.”
Bundrage was a breakout player in 2013, leading the team in catches (48), receiving yards (676) and touchdown catches (9).
'Quenton looks good,” said cornerback Nigel Tribune. 'He's limited at practice, but at the same time he's full speed. He's the same and hasn't lost a step. He's strong, fast and can catch so I feel like he's ready to go.”
Knott to see specialist
Junior linebacker Luke Knott, plagued by a hip injury since 2013, still is searching for answers and will see a hip specialist in Chicago.
Knott has missed most of spring ball with the injury that required surgery in the fall of 2013 and a cleanup procedure in the fall of 2014. He had some soreness when he returned for practice.
'That was kind of a red flag for us and I went to the doctor here in Ames, who has really done a great job,” Knott said. 'Since he didn't do the operation on my hip, that's why I have to go out to Chicago and talk to those guys.”
He's trying to get that visit scheduled.
'Hopefully, it's as soon as possible,” Knott said.
