Jeff Linder Jun. 10, 2015 11:16 am
Area softball Super Ten, through games played Tuesday, June 9:
1. BENTON COMMUNITY (18-0) - The area game(s) of the year (so far) are tonight at Van Horne, when Solon comes calling. Amber Fiser has allowed two runs (both unearned) in 40 2/3 innings.
2. IOWA CITY WEST (13-1) - Sweep of Kennedy on Tuesday gave Women of Troy a 10-0 mark in the MVC and a two-game lead in the rugged Valley Division.
3. SOLON (12-1) - Spartans take nine-game win streak to Benton tonight and have allowed one run in last five games. Emily Ira has been dominant in the batter's box (.634, 19 RBIs) and in the circle (7-0, 0.17 ERA).
4. CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON (9-4) - J-Hawks have lost three of their last five. A big opportunity awaits Friday, against 5A No. 1 Johnston, at home.
5. CENTER POINT-URBANA (14-3) - Freshman Maddie Karr leads the state in home runs, with 10. Not by coincidence, the Stormin' Pointers have scored 96 runs in a nine-game win streak.
6. CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER (6-4) - A sweep of Waterloo East (both by shutouts) extended Xavier's win streak to five. With an on-base percentage of .548, Hannah Helms is doing what a leadoff hitter should.
7. LINN-MAR (9-4) - If you didn't believe in the Lions before Tuesday, a double-header split with Jefferson makes you take notice. John Begley insists that Maddy Ryan is an all-stater, and it's hard to argue.
8. CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY (8-4) - Cougars dropped a pair to Iowa City West on Tuesday, but were in position to win both games. Tianna Drahn leads Class 5A in stolen bases, with 18.
9. CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE (9-4) - The Hawks are hitting their groove, with nine wins in the last 10 games. Sophomore Natalie Halvorson (8-3, 0.56 ERA, 78 K's in 62 innings) is blossoming into an excellent pitcher.
10. MID-PRAIRIE (9-5) - The Golden Hawks always play up in competition, and this year is no exception. Three losses are to Class 5A opponents.
