Newman, Vera Irene (Estling)
Vera Irene (Estling) Newman, 89, of Lee's Summit, Mo., formerly of Marion, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Jefferson Health Care Center in Lee's Summit. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Del Bear. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Burial: Dunkard Cemetery, Toddville.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara (Morris) Garrison of Lee's Summit; three grandchildren, Darren (Shelley) Garrison and David (Tammy) Garrison, all of Lee's Summit, and Beth (Frank) Dale, of Indianapolis, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Claire, Caroline and Andrew Garrison; her sister, Dorothy Stick of Houston, Texas; and her sister-in-law, Lucille Estling of Omaha, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Linnea Estling; her husband, Max Newman; and her siblings, Gunnar, Raymond, Leonard, Paul and Jess Estling and Helen Bowers.
Vera was born to Victor P. and Linnea (Meriman) Estling on Feb. 12, 1921, in Strawberry Point. She married Max L. Newman on June 23, 1940, in Toddville. Max passed away Oct. 2, 1955. Vera was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha and was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Post #675 of Toddville.
Vera was an avid reader, who especially enjoyed reading her Bible. She loved God and her country. She also enjoyed dancing, especially to Elvis. More than anything, Vera will be remembered as a loving mother and “Nan,” and as a devout Christian woman who loved the Lord.
In lieu of flowers, the family will establish a memorial fund in Vera's memory.
