Dorothy M. White Shepard, 96, of Panama City, Fla., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Clifford Sims State Veterans Nursing Home in Panama City, Fla. There will be a graveside military service and family gathering to celebrate her life. She will be buried next to her husband at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.
Survivors include her children, Mona, Roy, Donald, Mark, Scott and Lisa; a brother, James W. White; six grandchildren, Andrea, Matthew, Eric, Joel, Nathan and Sarah; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and James B. White; sisters, Phyllis and Alice; husband, Charles F. Shepard; and grandson, Justin Shepard.
Dorothy proudly served as first lieutenant for the U.S. Army from September 1943 to April 1946. Afterward, she was employed as a matron for the Cedar Rapids Police Department, during which she earned the second place award in a women's pistol shooting competition.
Dorothy supported her children by serving as a Navy mother, Boy Scout den mother and Camp Fire Girls leader. She enjoyed family vacations, sewing, gardening and painting. She was always ready to lend a hand to family, friends and neighbors. Dorothy will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
