Frederick "Fred" Shilhanek, 79, of Cedar Rapids, passed away in his home Tuesday, June 21, 2016. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, with a visitation from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Inurnment: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, is assisting the family.
He is survived by daughters, Terri Ann Takacs (Tim Bland), Susan Greenlee (Dick Parker) and Nancy Zlatohlavek (Mike); sons, Damon Shilhanek (Linda) and Chris Shilhanek; and stepdaughters, Laura Crosby (Lindy) and Lisa Kristiansen (Brian). He is also survived by his wife, Patricia; his brother, William; brother-in-law, Paul Prusha; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Deanna; sister, Therese Prusha; and brothers, Bernard and Terry.
Fred was born Oct. 24, 1936, in Tama, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Gertrude Shilhanek. Fred attended high school in Tama, graduating in 1955. On Sept. 22, 1956, he married Deanna Durfey in Tama. She passed away March 9, 1995. On April 4, 1997, he married Patricia Paul in Marion.
Fred retired from Kirkwood Community College in 1999 after 25 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion, and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing golf.
