William R. Freeman Sr., 91, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at St. Luke's Hospital. There will
be a gathering from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; a daughter, Cynthia Freeman of Glendale, Calif.; two sons, William Jr. (Deanna) of Cedar Rapids and Robert (Julie) of Walford; five grandchildren, Jessica, Jason (Wendy), Jamie (Chris), Samantha (Andrew) and Tabitha (Shawn); and eight great-grandchildren, Zach, Kylea, Jaylyn, Tristin, Jocelin, Isla, Ethan and Connor.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Opal.
Bill was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Graysville, Tenn., the son of Denton and Mary Mynatt Freeman. He married Shirley A. Whelchel on Aug. 21, 1951, in Glendale, Calif.
Bill was with Big Boy restaurants for 42 years, starting in California and retiring in Cedar Rapids in 1990.
He enjoyed going to the casino in Tama with Shirley and being a crossing guard for the children at Cleveland School for many years. His greatest joy, however, was the time he spent with his beloved family and with friends. His memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him.
