Fulton, Joan Lee
Joan Lee Fulton, 78, of Richmond, Va., passed from this life peacefully on Thursday, March 15, 2012. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Darrell and Nellie Williams of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Fulton; her son, Otis Fulton and his wife, Chris Gennings Fulton; her grandchildren, Jack and Drew Fulton, all of Richmond; her brother, Gary Williams, his wife Diane, and their children, Todd and Tami, all of Cedar Rapids.
Joan held degrees from Coe College, the University of Iowa, and the University of Virginia, and was a retired professor of education at Virginia Commonwealth University. At VCU and through her non-profit organization, the Developmental Skills Institute, Joan worked with thousands of teachers from Virginia to the Navajo Indian reservations in Arizona to help them become more effective with their students. Her particular passion was developing methods to help at-risk students who so often fall between the cracks and fail.
Because she was a great animal lover, in lieu of flowers, well wishers are asked to make a donation in Joan's name to the Richmond SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, VA 23220, phone (804) 643-6785.
