DAYTON, Ohio - Chieh-Wei Hu threw six shutout innings, striking out 10, to help the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 4-0 shutout win Saturday night over the Dayton Dragons.
The right-hander from Taiwan allowed just two hits in his latest impressive outing for the Kernels. He has made three starts since being promoted from Rookie-level Elizabethton, and is 3-0 with a 2.00 earned run average in 18 innings.
Jake Reed and Nick Burdi finished up a win that improved Cedar Rapids' record to 50-54 overall and 19-15 in the Midwest League's second half. The Kernels are tied for second place in the Western Division, three games behind first-place Kane County.
Cedar Rapids and Dayton play the second game of their three-game series Sunday afternoon.
The Kernels scored three runs in the top of the first inning, which was more than enough for Hu. Logan Wade, Chad Christensen, Mitch Garver and Bryan Haar had RBIs in the game, with Engelb Vielma picking up two hits.
