Dec. 1, 2010 9:54 am
An evening fire that completed destroyed a detached garage in the flood zone is considered suspicious, according to fire officials.
Firefighters were called to 926 M Street SW at 5:58 p.m. when a 911 caller reported that a garage was fully involved with fire next to his father's pickup.
Firefighters arrived to find the detached garage completely involved with fire. Only part of one wall was still standing upon the fire department's arrival. Firefighters contained the fire and applied water and foam to thoroughly extinguish the blaze.
Fire Department spokesperson, Greg Buelow said a 19 year-old male reported that the fire was threatening his father's pickup truck. The 19 year-old was later taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Buelow said that the structure was consumed to the point that firefighters could not determine its size.
The house that was once behind the garage was demolished after the floods of 2008. There are not many structures in the area, and the fire was contained to the garage.
