Defensive end Drew Ott was named Big Ten Conference defensive player of the week for his performance in Iowa's 17-13 win over Ball State last weekend.
It's the first Big Ten honor is the first for Ott (6-foot-4, 270-pounds), a junior from Trumbull, Nebraska. (Giltner HS). He is the first Hawkeye to earn the honor this season. Three Iowa players earned the conference defensive honor on four occasions in 2013.
Ott recorded a team and career-high 13 tackles against BSU. He also had 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack and forced fumble that sealed the victory with 25 seconds left.
The Iowa defense held Ball State's offense to six points, 90 rushing yards and 219 yards total offense.
In two games, Ott has recorded 17 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He ranks third in the Big Ten in tackles for loss and 15th in total tackles. The Iowa defense hasn't allowed a rushing touchdown in two games and ranks second in the Big Ten with seven sacks.
On Iowa State . . .
I'm in Ames today and I think going to write about the mood here. Seems upbeat. The opening loss to North Dakota State could've been absorbed two ways: They could've quit, and right tackle Jacob Gannon did in fact quit. Or they could've responded the way they did last week against Kansas State, a gutty and nearly winning effort against a highly favored opponent.
The first line I saw for ISU-Iowa was 15.5 in favor of the Hawkeyes. So, once again, the shoulder chip for Iowa's opponent is heavily in play.
Iowa State wide receiver Jarvis West was selected the College Football Performance award punter returner of the week and to the Paul Hornung award honor roll on Monday.
West had 207 total yards while scoring a receiving, passing and punt return touchdown against No. 19 K-State.
More football nerdiness . . .
Iowa's personnel groups last week against Ball State:
11 (one RB, one TE) - 61 (73 percent)
12 (one RB, two TE) - 6 (7 percent)
21 (RB, FB and one TE) - 12 (14 percent)
Empty (five wideouts) - 4 (5 percent)
22 (RB, FB, two TEs) - 3 (4 percent)
