#7 Iowa at UNI wrestling: live coverage

Dec. 9, 2010 5:59 pm
The West Gym as packed on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls. This type of electric atmosphere is exactly what Doug Schwab wanted to produce when moving the Panthers home duals from the McLeod Center.
Iowa is 6-0 with a 67-dual win streak, including 43 on the road. UNI is 4-3 this year with two close losses to Maryland and Bloomsburg, but a lopsided loss to Northwestern in the season-opening event.
I'm expecting a 9-1 or 8-2 split in matches. Could be similar to last year's meet in that fashion, but expect way more fight from the Panthers.
(Refresh the page for updates)
We're starting at 133 pounds, which will be Ryan Jauch of UNI vs. either Tony Ramos or Nate Moore.
During introductions only Ramos was lined up and announced so Moore wasn't in the equation.
We've started.
Jauch slows the match down at the start, controlling ties. Ramos scores a T2 with 8 seconds to go for 2-0 lead after 1.
Jauch with an escape followed by a Ramos T2 and he rides Jauch out. 4-1 lead with about 1:55 of RT after second.
Ramos really takes over, scoring three more takedowns, working for a fall until the final buzzer.
Ramos wins 12-3 and Iowa up 4-0.
At 141, Iowa's Mark Ballweg vs. Aaron Senzee. Scoreless after first. Ballweg rides out Senzee the entire second period. Ballweg's choice for third. takes time making decision, turning to corner to consult with coaches more than once.Ballweg chooses neutral and then gets a T2 right away. 2-0 with a minute to go.
Ballweg wins, 3-0, and Iowa is up, 7-0.
At 149, Jeret Chiri (I) vs.Jamal Lawrence (UNI). Lawrence comes out like a house of fire, getting an early T2 but Chiri E1 and answers with a T2. 1:10 to go in first and it's 3-3. Chiri with another T2 and leads 5-3 at the end of first.
Chiri rides out Lawrence. he leads 5-3 with 2:18 in RT after second.
Chiri turns him and pins Lawrence in 5:59. Iowa up, 13-0. Schwab gave Lawrence a glare as he walk away from the mat. I'm sure that finish didn't endear him to the coach.
At 157, Derek St. John (I) vs. David Bonin (UNI). St. John with two takedowns, but called for locked hands late to have a 4-2 lead after first.
St. John's length amazes me. He's so long that he can reach in and look over-extended but next thing you know he's in deep and is finishing the takedown.
A St. John E1 is the only scoring in the second. 5-2 St. John after two. A good scramble as Bonin almost had the tying T2, but St. John defends it before scoring his own late for an 8-4 win. Iowa leads, 16-0.
At 165, Aaron Janssen (I) vs. Nick Pickerell (UNI).
Scoreless after the first period.
Janssen with an E1 and a T2 for 3-0 lead after second. Pickerell was riding Janssen and brought him back to the mat and looked as if he may have gotten a tilt for NF2, but ref Curt Frost said it was two 1-counts. Sure was close.
Janssen rides Pickerell out for the third and Janssen wins 4-0 with 2:08 of RT. Iowa leads, 19-0. We are taking a 10-minute break.
At the midway point, I have Iowa up 13-1 in takedowns and 4-0 in riding time points. If you're getting takedown a lot and being ridden it doesn't bode well. The only match where they got a takedown and didn't give up an official riding time point is the match where Chiri scored a pin for Iowa.
We're starting again. At 174, Ethen Lofthouse vs. Brice Wolf.
Lofthouse with two T2 in the first for 4-1 lead to start second. Lofthouse with three takedowns in the second and two more in the final period for a 16-5 major dec. Iowa up, 23-0.
At 184, Grant Gambrall vs. Ryan Yoder. Gambrall with a T2 about one minute into the match and rides out Yoder. 2-0 lead and 2:01 RT after first.
Gambrall E1 is only scoring in the second. Gambrall up, 3-0 to start third.
Yoder gets an E1 in third, but Gambrall holds on for 4-2 win. Gambrall looked gassed in the final period. Yoder in on a few shots, but couldn't score. Iowa up, 26-0.
At 197, Luke Lofthouse (I) vs. Joe Johnson (UNI).
A part of the scoreboard that's hanging over a set of bleachers on the floor literally is falling apart.
Lofthouse holds takedown clinic for a 19-7 major at 197. Iowa leads 30-0.
At Hwt., Christian Brantley (UNI) vs. Blake Rasing (Iowa). The only rematch from last year and the only match that UNI won last year in the 48-3 win for Iowa.
Scoreless after first.
Rasing rides Brantley out in second. Sounds like the same thing that cost brantley a match against Iowa freshman Bobby Telford.
Rasing with an E1 and RT for a 2-0 decision. Iowa leads, 33-0.
McDonough caps Iowa's 39-0 win with a fall over terrance Young at 125. McD's pin was in 1:12.
