Duffy, William 'Bill' J.
William “Bill” J. Duffy, 77, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013, unexpectedly at his home. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. A vigil service will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Teahen Funeral Home. Friends may visit with the family following the vigil until 7 p.m. Friends may also visit Monday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Bill is survived by two sons, Mark of Des Moines and Joel (Krista) of Marion; two granddaughters, Cailin and Rachel Duffy; a brother, Raymond Duffy of Boonville, Mo.; and two sisters, Joanne Witting of Columbia, Mo., and Mary Sue Duffy of Ames.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents.
William John was born April 25, 1935, in Ames, Iowa, the son of William Joseph and Emma Antonia (Bousek) Duffy. He graduated from Ames High School and then later from Iowa State University in 1957, with a degree in technical journalism. While attending Iowa State, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and Sigma Delta Chi Journalism Society. He married Beverley Hudson in 1960. They were later divorced. William wrote for the Waterloo Courier and the Cedar Rapids Gazette before he became head of the News Service at Kirkwood Community College. While working at Kirkwood, William was also the Community Education Information officer and director of Special Marketing Communications. He received the President's Award for outstanding professional service in 1997.
Bill was president of the St. Jude Catholic Church Education board, a member of the St. Jude Social Outreach Committee, active with Eye 380 Organization, and a member of the RSVP board of directors.
His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved attending their soccer games no matter what. Bill loved to ride his bike, take walks, was an avid Iowa State Cyclones fan, and a proud employee and supporter of Kirkwood Community College.
