The Rutgers-Iowa men's basketball rivalry is as old as the hills, as deep as the oceans, as fiery as Sofia Vergara.
Just kidding. It's none of those things. Now, on with some Fun Facts.
1. The two teams have met just once. Iowa beat the Scarlet Knights 87-83 in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Providence, R.I. Iowa's B.J. Armstrong had 35 points. That matched his career-high.
Iowa had a 19-0 run in the second half. Armstrong made six 3-pointers in the first half.
2. Rutgers has a 9-game losing streak. That might produce optimism in Iowa's camp were the Hawkeyes not coming off a loss Sunday to Northwestern, which had dropped its previous 10 games.
3. The Scarlet Knights were 334th in the nation in field goal percentage, 339th in points per game.
4. Rutgers lost 79-51 at Penn State on Jan. 24. Penn State is 3-11 in the Big Ten.
5. The Scarlet Knights lost 45-26 to Virginia last Nov. 29 in Brooklyn, N.Y. It was the lowest-scoring game for Rutgers since its 40-24 loss to Princeton in the 1942-43 season.
6. The 26 points is tied for the lowest Division I scoring output of the season. Savannah State lost 87-26 at Louisville on Nov. 24.
7. Rutgers' football team scored 40 points in its Quick Lane Bowl victory over North Carolina last December.
8. In Big Ten games, the Scarlet Knights are shooting 62.9 percent from the foul line.
9. The Scarlet Knights' top two scorers are Mack and Jack. Myles Mack averages 14.0 points per game. Kadeem Jack averages 13.3. Mack is a good player, but he airballed a layup a week ago.
10. And now, Jack Mack and the Heart Attack.
11. Rutgers' coach is Eddie Jordan. He played in 420 NBA games. He coached in 600 NBA games, and took four straight Washington teams to the playoffs from 2005 to 2008. He was not the NBA's all-time most-famous Jordan.s
12. Rutgers hasn't participated in the NCAA tournament since 1991. That was also the last year it had a winning record in conference play, when it was 14-4 in the Atlantic 10. It was a Big East member for 19 years after that, where it had a league record of 92-216.
13. Rutgers' home game against Indiana Sunday is sold out to the general public. Student tickets are still available. Rutgers has had one sellout of 8,003 tickets this season, for Ohio State.
14. Rutgers is New Jersey's state university. It was named for Col. Henry Rutgers, whose family built their wealth from brewing. The colonel said beer and porter were 'nourishing fluids, which will not injure any man.”
15. Henry Rutgers was a lifelong New Yorker.
