It was my turn to photograph the annual Thanksgiving meal. It's not an award winner or anything. It's just a nice photo of people being people. Logan Nedrow talks to Freddie Pittman and his wife Linda during the Thanksgiving meal at the Fillmore Center overflow shelter in northwest Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
I loved the interaction between this former NFL player and the little girl. The pastor and members of the congregation were welcoming to me as I tried to be as unobtrusive as I could. Sad world we live in when I have to illustrate a story about a house of worship and it's plan to deal with an active shooter or some other disturbance. Thom (cq) Darden (center) a monitor for the congregation at Bethel AME Church visits with congregants before the Sunday worship service at Bethel AME Church in southeast Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019. Photographing food and drink is a specialty all its own which I am not an expert. I like the reflection of the cups on the bar as well as the name of the restaurant on the wall in the background and upside-down on the glass.Peach aperol spritz with Aperol, Prosecco, peach and club soda at Bari Italian, 450 First St. SW, Suite 103, in southwest Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019. About 2,400 farm-raised trout were released into the lake, an annual effort that stocks the body of water for winter angling. (Rebecca F. Miller/The Gazette)
This photo doesn't illustrate just how dark it was in Travis Allen's paint booth. Modern digital cameras are so much better at making images in low light. Allen is blind and works without any lights. As a journalist, it wouldn't be ethically right for him to turn on the lights for my benefit. I want to document the scene and his environment how he uses it. For the gear heads, it was shot at 1/80th of a second at F3.2 using an ISO of 10,000. Artist Travis Allen uses a piece of filter material as a scrim to create a fog effect as he works one a cemetery background that he will use as a background for a spider sculpture he is working on at his home/studio in Lisbon, Iowa, on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019. The trumpet is made using parts of brass shell casings similar to the rifle used in the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people were killed in 2018. I also photographed details of the lead pipe which is made from the brass bodies of the shell casings. I didn't notice that the finger buttons are made by the head and rim of the casings. Bryan Powell of Iowa City, Iowa, a doctoral student of the University of Iowa plays a trumpet from the Instrument of Hope project during a technical rehearsal for the Revival Theatre Company's production of 'Oklahoma' at Sinclair Auditorium at Coe College in northeast Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019. I enjoyed spending time at Bauman's, even though there weren't any customers that came into the store while I was there. Olivia told me that some women had just left just before I arrived. 'That's the story of my life,' I told her. The unique revolving display cabinets house even more merchandise in the already packed store. With the closing of Irwin's in Marion several years ago, Bauman's is one of the few places in the area that offers full service men's clothing. Olivia Randall arranges shoes on display in the front display window at Bauman's, 124 First St. SW, in Mount Vernon, Iowa, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019. The store has been providing premier men's clothing since 1909. Olivia and Josh Randall took over the long-running men's clothing store from the previous owner Mike Smith in July. Laura Adams of Waterloo pushes her daughter Josie Adams, 2, on a swing on the Greenhill Park Place to Play Playground in Cedar Falls on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019. The accessible playground is easier for Adams to navigate in her wheelchair or with her cane. Adams has become an advocate for disability rights while recovering from rare complications following the birth of her daughter in Dec. 2015. (Liz Martin/The Gazette)
I was using a new (to me) electronic flash and a transmitter that lets me use a shutter speed faster than the maximum that the camera is designed to use when using flash. I shot some frames where the two men were looking into the camera. Those photos were okay. I like the feel of this one better. I took it while the they were talking to the reporter who was just to my right. I like this frame because they're mimicking the giant statue. Stone carver J.B. Barnhouse (left) and Harvest Preserve Foundation owner Doug Paul stand next to the sculpture 'Man on a Bench' at the preserve in Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday, Nov. 8, 2019. Paul plans to move the sculpture along Scott Boulevard after agreeing on a land swap with ACT. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
This was a simple, one light portrait. I usually just augment the ambient light that is already there and use flash to fill in the shadows. We had a discussion in the newsroom about the hat that Markeece was wearing. We ended up going with this frame since the hat added to the overall feel of the business. Markeece Johnson CEO of Finer Streetwear Collection at his shop in Iowa City, Iowa, on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
