Father Time caught up with Robert L. Banse, 93, of Cedar Rapids, on Feb. 28, 2017. He died at his home at Residence at North Ridge in New Hope, Minn., surrounded by his family. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Reasoner. Burial: St. John Cemetery, with military honors by American Legion Post 727. Friends may visit with the family Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and Saturday after 9 a.m. at the church.
Bob was born Oct. 25, 1923, in Benton County, the son of Chris A. and Emma Marie (Cesner) Banse. He married Edna Svoboda on June 10, 1947, in Walford. Edna preceded Bob in death in 2007.
Bob served in the Army (405th INF REGT-Ozark BN) during World War II. He participated in the Rhineland Central Europe campaign crossing the Ruhr and Rhine Rivers, receiving two battle stars and the bronze medal before waiting for the Russians on the Elbe River. Bob worked at Link-Belt Speeder, Nesbitt and Wilson Packing House before retiring.
He was a member of the American Legion in Garrison, Local P-3 Retirees and a charter member of St. Jude Catholic Church. He believed in enjoying life, family, woodworking, playing cards and having fun.
Bob is survived by his three sons, Tom (Karen) of Waukee, Bob (Jo) of Plymouth, Minn., and Ron (Engra Lyn) of Omaha, Neb.; daughter, Anne (Adam) Miller of Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law, Kate Banse of Bloomington, Minn.; 15 grandchildren, Erin (Steve), Adam (Jennilyn), Nathan (Jodi), Tony (Sara), Zachary, Lindsay (Leon), Andy (Sarah), Whitney (Seth), Michelle (Steve), Brady, Ben, Levi, Emma, Jacob and Grace; 10 great-grandchildren, Alex, Olivia, Addison, Miller, Madeline Jo, Avery, Jovie, Sam, Owen and Wally; and sisters-in-law, Arlene Erusha of Cedar Rapids and Ellen Banse of Walford.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Edna; son, R.J.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Freeman (Lorna), Jack and Dave (Lois); brother-in-law, Bob Erusha; and an infant sister.
