Iowa basketball recruit to announce decision Monday (with AAU video)
Mar. 13, 2011 7:36 pm
Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery apparently has locked up his first recruit from the 2012 class, according to a basketball source.
Kyle Meyer, a 6-foot-10 junior post from Northview High School in Alpharetta, Ga., will announce his decision at 5 p.m. EST Monday. In a phone interview Sunday, Meyer declined to reveal the commitment and instead said he'll discuss his choice on Monday.
His other finalists are Clemson and East Carolina, according to Rivals.com. Meyer attended Iowa's game against Michigan on Feb. 19 in Iowa City.
Meyer averaged 14 points a game as a sophomore and 16 points as a junior. He also plays AAU basketball for the Atlanta Celtics, a program that has produced 10 NBA players including stars Amare Stoudamire, Dwight Howard and Joe Johnson.
According to an ESPN scouting report, Meyer "is effective playing facing up where he can knock down a 15-17 foot jumper and he is improving with his back to the basket in the low post. He runs the floor consistently and does a nice job finding a seam rebounding the ball in transition. He plays good low post position defense and challenges the shot by bodying up with hands high; also showed he is capable of blocking shots off the ball. He has a good work ethic and is impressive showing his skill set away from the basket."
The ESPN scouting report said Meyer, who weighs 215 pounds, needs to "mature and develop more strength and then he will be a handful around the basket."
Iowa has two scholarships remaining for the 2011 season and is slated to have four open scholarships -- before Meyer's commitment -- for 2012.
