Iowa high school football roundup: Week 4 area scores, stats and more

There were upsets and milestones, blowouts and last-minute victories. Just another Friday night of Iowa high school football.

Here's our Week 4 roundup, with coverage and scores from around the Gazette area.

West Branch 56, Tipton 13

Class 1A second-ranked West Branch romped to a 56-13 non-district football triumph at Oliphant Street Stadium, marking the 300th victory of Coach Butch Pedersen's career.

'It's an honor to be a part of it,' said Tanner Lukavsky, who scored four touchdowns. 'It's a family atmosphere here, and Coach is like a grandpa to me.'

Pedersen, 67, became the 13th coach in Iowa history to reach the 300-win plateau.

Cedar Rapids Washington 54, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 14

Cedar Rapids Washington's offense lacked a little bit of a punch in the season's first three weeks.

Ross Snitker may be able to provide the wallop the Warriors need to deliver to opposing defenses.

Snitker ran rampant, scoring five touchdowns and propelling Washington to a 54-14 victory over crosstown rival Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Urbandale 17, Linn-Mar 16

Linn-Mar and Urbandale both made their share of mistakes Friday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

In the end, the Lions defense couldn't make one final stand.

Alex Economos connected on a 28-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining to edge the Lions, 17-16.

Clear Creek-Amana 17, Marion 15

Their RPI coming into the week was 4. Their record remains unblemished.

Time to take these Clear Creek-Amana Clippers seriously.

Quarterback Andrew Rohret rushed for 218 yards and had a touchdown run and pass as CC-A survived a late Marion comeback for a 17-15 win Friday night at Thomas Park.

Iowa City Liberty 27, Mid-Prairie 22

It's just a game.

A couple of hundred yards rushing, a 71-yard touchdown reception, and a team win pales in comparison to the struggles of a cousin with cancer.

Iowa City Liberty junior Kaleb Williams battled emotion and the Mid-Prairie defense en route to a 27-22 win Friday night.

Iowa City High 23, Dubuque Hempstead 22

In a back-and-forth battle that consisted of seven lead changes, it was Iowa City High that came out victorious in a 23-22 nailbiter over Dubuque Hempstead at Bates Field.

'We don't always get to predict the outcome,' City High Coach Dan Sabers said. 'But I knew I was feeling good about my football team tonight.'

Following an interception by Tonka Hickman in the first quarter, City High (2-2) took the ball down to the 7-yard line. From there, kicker Ben Steve booted a 24-yard field goal to give City High an early 3-0 lead.

Hempstead (1-3) answered as sophomore quarterback Aidan Dunne scampered into the end zone from 12 yards out to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive for the Mustangs.

City High then struck in a flash, as Raphael Hamilton laid out a perfect pass on the sideline that landed squarely in the arms of speedy receiver Malik Kimber. Kimber took Hamilton's pass 63 yards for the score, putting the Little Hawks back up 10-7. The passing TD was City High's first of the season.

'It was a huge confidence builder for me,' Hamilton said.

On City High's next possession, Steve hit another field goal, this one from 37 yards out.

But right before half, Dunne punched it in again to give Hempstead the lead back, 14-13.

Midway through the third quarter, following a turnover, Steve again came up with an important field goal from 41 yards out to give Little Hawks the lead back, 16-14.

Cedar Rapids Xavier 45, West Delaware 12

Braden Stovie rushed for 166 yards on 16 carries and scored two touchdowns as top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier rolled to a 4-0 start with a 45-12 Class 3A prep football win over West Delaware Friday night.

The Saints led, 7-0, after the first quarter and 17-6 at halftime, but scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter.

Stovie scored on runs of 42 and 38 yards.

Quinn Schulte added 94 yards on 14 rushes and scored three touchdowns, covering 8, 2 and 1 yards. He completed just 3 of 8 passes for 66 yards, but had one TD pass.

Xavier totaled 401 yards of offense and held the Hawks (3-1) to 189.

Nick Casey passed for two TDs — 8 yards to Logan Winn in the second quarter and 9 yards to Joey Sunne in the fourth.

Iowa City West 48, Dubuque Senior 14

Jalen Gaudet caught touchdown passes from two different quarterbacks and Owen McAreavy ran for two more scores as the Trojans rolled at Dalzell Field.

Gaudet caught a 32-yard touchdown from Marcus Morgan in the second quarter, then added a 40-yard score from backup Joseph Kuehn with 23 seconds left in the half as the Trojans improved to 3-1.

Gaudet finished with five catches for 122 yards. Morgan completed 9 of 20 passes for 146 yards with an interception.

Kuehn was 10-for-13 for 176 yards. He also threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Gudenkauf in the final minutes.

Landon Green scored on a 16-yard run and Grant Henderson returned a fumble 8 yards for another touchdown for West, which scored 41 consecutive points after Senior's Noah Gerken returned the opening kickoff 98 yards.

DJ Hoskins also scored for Senior (1-3).

Dyersville Beckman 27, Anamosa 20

Owen Grover rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries as the Blazers won on the road.

Evan Wulfekhule also had two rushing TDs, including a game-winning 9-yard jaunt with 7:59 left in the game.

Nathan Dietiker led Anamosa with 80 yards on 17 rushes and two TDs.

Monticello 43, Maquoketa Valley 7

Lake Stahlberg carried 15 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns for the host Panthers (2-2).

Jeff Carlson threw two touchdown passes to Devin Kraus. Maquoketa Valley fell to 0-4.

Decorah 23, Crestwood 6

Drake Shelton rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns as the Vikings rolled at home.

Kailer McCave added 66 yards on the ground and one score as part of a 290-yard rushing attack for Decorah (2-2).

Jace Johnson completed 4 of 6 passes for 71 yards, three to Matthew Franzen for 55 yards

Alburnett 49, Northeast 38

The Pirates (2-2) rushed for 599 yards in a win at home.

Holden Sevening led the way with 203 yards on 29 carries, scoring three touchdowns. Hunter Caves added 194 on 18 rushes and scored one TD, and Parker Gallagher had 168 yards on 10 carries and scored three TDs.

Mount Vernon 42, Maquoketa 7

Brady Ketcum completed 20 of 31 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns as the Mustangs on on the road.

Paul Ryan added 205 yards on 25 rushes and scored three TDs as Mount Vernon picked up its first win of the season.

The Mustangs totaled 397 yards of offense, holding the Cardinals to 92.

Washington 34, West Liberty 27 (OT)

The Demons know how to create excitement for their homecoming game.

Let West Liberty take a 27-17 lead late in the third quarter on a 24-yard pass to Coy Ruess, then score a TD on a pass to Cade Hennigan to pull within 27-24.

With 20 seconds remaining, throw a 62-yard bomb to Hennigan and kick a tying field goal with two seconds left.

Then score first in overtime on a pass to Chase McDole and sack West Liberty on fourth down for the win.

Washington improved to 2-2 with the win, dropping West Liberty to 1-3.

Center Point-Urbana 34, Independence 14

Rylan Felton scored two touchdowns and Kole Tupa passed for 165 yards and two TDs as the Stormin' Pointers won at home.

Aled Wade added 97 rushing yards and 30 receiving yards for CPU.

Logan Schmitt rushed for 145 yards for the Mustangs and scored one TD and passed for 129 yards and another score.
