Just call them the wire-to-wire Wildcats.
Maquoketa Valley has been rated No. 1 in Class A football since the preseason. The Wildcats concluded their start-to-finish run at the top in the Gazette/KCRG/KGYM poll. The last ballot of the season was released Monday.
Led by Ryan Parmely's 2,476 rushing yards and 37 touchdowns, the Wildcats take a 9-0 record into Wednesday's first-round playoff game against Winfield-Mount Union.
Cedar Rapids Washington (Class 4A), Pella (3A), Clear Lake (2A), Iowa City Regina (1A) and Don Bosco (8-Player) are the other No. 1 teams. Regina, which came into the season with 56 consecutive wins, fell out of the top spot after a season-opening overtime loss to Solon, but returned to the penthouse after beating Cedar Rapids Xavier in Week 8.
Washington (9-0) will take a 15-game regular-season win streak into 2015, and now prepares for the 4A playoffs. The Warriors open at Kingston Stadium against Clinton (2-7).
Bettendorf is No. 2, followed by Central Iowa titans West Des Moines Dowling, West Des Moines Valley and Waukee.
Pella is the only unbeaten in 3A and outscored its opponents by a 426-60 margin. Defending 3A champion Sioux City Heelan is No. 2, followed by Solon.
Pella is one of three unanimous No. 1s, joining Clear Lake and Don Bosco.
Clear Lake is followed in 2A by Spirit Lake and Williamsburg.
Regina handled Fort Dodge St. Edmond for the 1A title last year, and leads the Gaels in the final 1A balloting. South Winneshiek is third, West Branch is fourth.
Logan-Magnolia is second to Maquoketa Valley is Class A.
Don Bosco takes a 23-game win streak into its first-round game with Twin Cedars. Janesville is second in 8-Player.
