George Daniel Swanson Jr., 85, of Oxford, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at Mercy, Iowa City.
The family will have a private gathering and celebration of his life. Burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice in George's name.

George was born on Dec. 8, 1933, in Chicago, the son of George and Clara Scheitler Swanson Sr. He married Betty M. Bollinger on Feb. 2, 1957, in the Danford Chapel in Iowa City.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of sergeant.
He was well known in the construction business in Iowa City for over 40 years. George was an avid reader and was well known at the Coralville Public Library. He enjoyed his construction work and watching the Chicago Bears and the Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed helping his family and friends.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife of almost 62 years, Betty Swanson; his children, Danny Akers (Vickie) of Williamsburg, Georgia Gerth of Muscatine, Nancy Swanson of Oxford, Linda Keast (Russell) of Cedar Rapids and Kevin Swanson (Mary Lou) of Amana; 10 grandchildren, Devon, Danielle, Bill, Evan, Chris, Jesse, Zach, Sam, Jacob and Lauren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Jean Brady; and one son-in-law, Steven Gerth.
