Girls’ state basketball: Monday’s capsules

DES MOINES — Capsules on Monday's games at the girls' state basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena:

Class 1A Quarterfinals

No. 1 Springville (22-2) vs. No. 12 Burlington Notre Dame (19-6)

Time: 10 a.m.

Coaches: Nate Sanderson is in his seventh year at Springville and owns a 109-59 mark. In 15 years total, he is 178-156. Jim Myers is in his second year at Notre Dame and owns a 43-9 mark. He is 106-61 overall.

Top players: Rylee Menster (5-6, jr.) and Mikayla Nachazel (5-11, jr.) are returning first-team all-staters for Springville. Menster averages 18.2 points and 6.0 steals per game while Nachazel adds 18.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. Notre Dame's Johanna Myers (6-0, sr.) averages 24.8 points per game and shoots 91 percent from the free throw line. Emma Lynch (6-2, sr.) adds 14.9 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.

Tournament history: Springville is making its fifth appearance, its third in a row. All of the other four ended on Championship Friday, with the Orioles taking home titles in 2008 and 2016. They were runners-up in 2009 and 2015. Notre Dame is in the field for the fifth year in a row. The Nikes won the 1A title in 2014, and reached the semifinals last year.

No. 2 Turkey Valley (21-2) vs. No. 9 Janesville (24-0)

Time: 1:30 p.m.

Coaches: Carletta Nymeyer and Dan Stepan are co-head coaches at Turkey Valley. Nymeyer is 83-15 in four years; Stepan is 87-31 in five. Steve Chidester is in his ninth year at Janesville and is 150-62.

Top players: Upper Iowa signee Shelby Reicks (5-11, sr.) leads Turkey Valley with 14.3 points, 5.7 assists and 5.8 steals per game. Morgen Kuennen (5-11, sr.) adds 11.5 points per contest. Janesville has a gem in Tori Hazard (5-11, sr.), who averages 20.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 5.8 steals per game, and has scored more than 1,500 points in her career. Briana Baker-Bruce (5-7, soph.) adds 11.8 points per game.

Tournament history: Turkey Valley is making its second trip. The Trojans debuted last year, reaching the 1A finals and falling a point short against Springville. Janesville also has advanced for the second time; the Wildcats qualified in 2014.

Class 2A Quarterfinals

No. 1 Iowa City Regina (25-0) vs. No. 12 Logan-Magnolia (21-3)

Time: 5 p.m.

Coaches: Jeff Wallace is in his seventh year at Regina (and his first year back after an 11-year absence). He is 144-30. Derek Sonderland is in his sixth year at Logan-Magnolia and owns a 65-73 mark there. In 16 years overall, he is 233-138.

Top players: Regina's Mary Crompton (5-8, jr.) is one of the state's best pure shooters. She averages 18.7 points per game and shoots nearly 50 percent from 3-point range. Sarah Lehman (5-10, sr.) and Alex Wiese (6-0, soph.) add 15.3 ppg apiece, and Wiese grabs 9.1 rebounds per game. Playmaker Kenzie Cunard (5-6, jr.) leads a young Logan-Magnolia squad at 18.9 points per game, followed by Kylan Straight (5-7, jr.) and Delaney Ettleman (5-11, jr.) at 13.1 and 10.2 ppg, respectively.

Tournament history: Regina has qualified for the sixth time, including its third in a row. The Regals were 2A semifinalists last year. Logan-Magnolia is making its state debut.

No. 5 North Linn (24-1) vs. No. 4 Western Christian (22-2)

Time: 6:45 p.m.

Coaches: Brian Wheatley has posted a 235-75 record in 13 years at North Linn. Justin Negen is 22-2 in one year at Western.

Top players: Ashley Tull (5-11, jr.) leads a balanced North Linn squad at 15.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.3 steals per contest. Twins Grace Flanagan (5-8, fr.) and Abby Flanagan (5-9, fr.) add 13.2 and 10.1 ppg, respectively, and both shoot 84 percent from the free-throw line. Western's Ashtyn Veerbeek (6-2, jr.) is one of the most dominant players in the 2A field. The Nebraska commit averages 23.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per contest. Erika Feenstra (6-1, sr.) adds 15.4 ppg.

Tournament history: North Linn is in the field for the fourth time, the third in the last four years. The Lynx were 2A runners-up in 2015. Western has qualified for the 10th time, its sixth in a row. The Wolfpack won three titles in a row (2012-14) before North Linn knocked them out in the 2015 semifinals. Western was the 2A runner-up last year.
