Iowa City man arrested for eluding University Heights police

An 18-year-old Iowa City man was arrested for eluding, a class D felony, and operating while intoxicated after authorities say he failed to stop for a University Heights police officer that attempted to pull him over for speeding.

Reports indicate that Dominic S. Magalhaes, of 1749 Hafor Drive, allegedly failed to yield to an officer in a marked patrol car near Melrose Avenue and Sunset Street in University Heights and sped away at around 2:20 a.m. Saturday.

Magalhaes reached speeds of 70 mph in a 25 mph zone before crashing his vehicle and fleeing on foot. He was taken into custody about 2 1/2 hours later and allegedly admitted to being a "5.5 out of 10" on a scale of driving while intoxicated, according to police reports.

Magalhaes was being held at the Johnson County Jail on a $15,000 cash bond Sunday morning.
