Iowa high school football roundup: Week 3 area scores, stats and more
Week 3 of the Iowa high school football season featured unique intersectional matchups, crazy finishes and statement wins.
Here's a look at our area coverage, scores, stats and more.
Waukee 33, Cedar Rapids Prairie 6
Perhaps this is an oversimplification, perhaps it's not. If Cedar Rapids Prairie wants to be talked about with the big boys of Class 4A, it's going to have to improve.
Waukee, already one of those 4A big boys, plucked the Class 4A No. 6 Hawks, 33-6, Friday night at John Wall Field. Sometimes the score doesn't really indicate play in a game, but this time it pretty much did.
Pella Christian 24, Iowa City Regina 21
The Regals, ranked No. 6 in Class 1A, built a 21-7 lead midway through the third quarter and were beginning to impose their will. They appeared to stop Pella Christian deep in their own territory on a third-and-long play but were hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that kept the drive alive.
From that point on, it was all Pella Christian (2-1). The Eagles scored 17 unanswered points, the final three coming on a Nathan De Bruin 20-yard field goal with 2:13 remaining, giving the visitors a stunning, 24-21, victory.
Iowa City West 31, Southeast Polk 17
Faced with a 4th-and-1 at his own 32-yard-line and momentum in the hands of the opponent, Garrett Hartwig made the call of the game.
On the field as protection for the West punter, Jason Strunk fielded the snap and charged upfield for 44 yards. Seven plays later, a 1-yard TD by Landon Green gave the Class 4A seventh-ranked Trojans a double-digit lead they never relinquished.
Linn-Mar 33, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 14
Linn-Mar discovered an offense, racking up 380 yards — including 286 in the air from Marcus Orr — and pulled away from Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 33-14, in a non-district contest Friday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.
It was career win No. 100 for James, in his second year as Linn-Mar's coach after a successful run at Cedar Rapids Washington.
Solon 47, Marion 10
Adam Bock is a standout defender for Solon.
His ability has already earned him a chance to continue as a linebacker at South Dakota State next year.
Bock showed he can do damage on offense as well. He scored four touchdowns and helped Class 3A eighth-ranked Solon to a 47-10 victory over Marion Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
Cedar Rapids Washington 10, Dubuque Senior 0
It may not have been the most glamorous performance, but thanks to a few adjustments and a workhorse, Cedar Rapids Washington tallied its first win of the 2018 season.
Washington was led by Reed Snitker, who ran the ball 32 times for 135 yards. Snitker was the lead back for the Warriors this week due to injuries in Washington's backfield.

Cedar Rapids Xavier 48, Davenport Assumption 0
Judging by the score alone, it appears Class 3A No. 1 Cedar Rapids Xavier's 48-0 win over Davenport Assumption was just another Saints rout.
When you look beneath the score, the win looks much more methodical. A blocked punt, an interception, and a fumble recovery all led to points. The offense churned through some early drops, but took advantage of the turnovers to move to 3-0.
Mount Vernon 35, West Delaware 33
Paul Ryan scored on a hook-and-ladder play with no time on the clock as Mount Vernon squeezed past Class 3A fourth-ranked West Delaware, 35-33, Friday night in a prep football game in Mount Vernon.
Ryan finished with 192 yards on 27 rushes, scoring on runs of 6 and 57 yards and the last-play 42-yarder.
The Mustangs (1-2) got the ball with 24.7 seconds left and ran two hook-and-ladder plays. On the final play, which started with 2.5 seconds left, quarterback Brady Ketchum passed to Blake Booth, who pitched the ball to Ryan.

Booth also scored a TD for Mount Vernon (2-1), Tyler Elliott kicked a 34-yard field goal and Nick Casey recovered a fumble in the end zone for a TD.
West Delaware's Nick Casey completed 23 of 41 passes for 225 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. Kyle Kelley caught both TD passes. Caleb Kehrli totaled 119 yards on 28 rushes and also scored a TD for the Hawks (2-1).

West Branch 31, Williamsburg 7
The Bears continued with a balanced offense and capitalized on opportunities en route to a at home.
West Branch moved to 3-0 with the win and head coach Butch Pedersen now has 299 coaching victories in his 35 years.
Beau Cornwell completed 19 of 32 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns — both to Brady Lukavsky — and also kicked a pair of 27-yard field goals in the second and fourth quarters. Tanner Lukavsky added 135 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Brett Schiele caught three passes for 102 yards.
The Bears will host Tipton next week as Pedersen is on the precipice of becoming just the 13th coach in the history of Iowa high school football to reach 300 wins.

Washington (Iowa) 35, Iowa City Liberty 19
If there is one exciting way to get a team's first win of the season, Washington (Iowa) did it in fashion.
Quarterback Luke Turner scored on a 37-yard run and had three aerial scores as the Demons raced to a 27-0 halftime lead.
Liberty got a rushing TD from Kaleb Williams on its first drive of the second half, but Cade Hennigan's second receiving TD of the night gave the home team a 35-6 advantage.
Turner completed 11 of 17 for 153 yards and four TDs with no interceptions and rushed 11 times for 57 yards.

Western Dubuque 19, Decorah 3
Calvin Harris threw touchdown passes to Drake George and Payton Quaqliano as the Bobcats won in Epworth.
Ben Bryant also scored for Western Dubuque (3-0), which outscored the Vikings, 19-0, in the second quarter.
Decorah fell to 1-2.

West Liberty 28, Anamosa 27 (OT)
Seth Feldman's touchdown pass to Will Esmoil and a PAT kick gave the Comets a win at home.
The game was scoreless at halftime.
Anamosa tied the game in regulation at 21-21 when quarterback Matthew Walton scored on a 1-yard run.
Walton caught a pass from Nolan McLean to put the Raiders up in OT, but they missed the PAT.
Walton finished with 245 passing yards at a TD, completing 15 of 25 passes. He added 67 rushing yards and two TDs. Zac McLean caught seven passes for 70 yards and a TD.

Turkey Valley 46, Midland 36
The Trojans led 38-14 at halftime and held on for the win in Wyoming.
Britan Martens had a big game for Midland, completing 16 of 35 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns and rushing 24 times for 160 yards and two more TDs.

Independence 55, Maquoketa 19
Logan Schmidt threw for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns as the Mustangs won at home.
Brady Webb had two receiving touchdowns and Shawn Geertmsa returned a kick for a scored and added a receiving TD.
North Linn 14, Alburnett 9
Austin Miller threw for 78 yards and one touchdown and also had a rushing TD for the host Lynx, who trailed 2-0 at halftime.
Brennen Becker rushed for 79 yards on 21 carries for North Linn (3-0).
Izic Mackey scored Alburnett's only TD on a pass from Hunter Caves.
Bellevue 36, Monticello 7
Hunter Classen scored five touchdowns as the Comets (3-0) won at Monticello (1-2).
Classen rushed for 113 yards and added 105 receiving. Lucas Tennant passed for 182 yards.
