MABEL DARLENE (DAIS) CORY
Marion
Mabel Darlene (Dais) Cory, of Marion, entered her
eternal rest with her Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ, on April 8, 2021. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home. Private funeral services will be held. A livestream of the funeral service may be accessed on the funeral home website under the obituary for Mabel, under the video tab starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 14.
Mabel is survived by her husband, Marvin Lee Cory; daughters, Cynthia (John) Hassen and Sheila Hawkins; 10 grandchildren, Rachel Hassen, Heidi Hassen, Shawn Hassen, Haley Grant, Samantha Hassen, Isaac Hassen, Destiny Hawkins, Caleb Hawkins, Cyle Hawkins and Shiloh Hassen; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings.
Mabel was born in Eureka, S.D., on Feb. 8, 1939, to George and Mary Dais. She grew up on their family farm, where she worked outside with the animals and driving the tractor with her feet when she was bored. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1957 and went on to attend National School of Business in Rapids City, S.D., where she graduated in August 1959.
Upon graduating, she moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and work for Collins. She met Marvin Cory in 1961 at a youth camp in Oregon and moved to Seattle in 1962 to be closer to him. They were married in Tacoma, Wash., on Jan. 19, 1963. Their daughter, Cynthia, was born May 1964 and the young family moved back to Marion, Iowa, in 1965 because Mabel hated the abundance of rain in Seattle! They took up residence in Marion, and their daughter Sheila was born in May 1969. She began working at Collins again, as a secretary, and after a few years, worked her way up to senior contract manager. She retired from Rockwell Collins in 1998 and began one of her favorite hobbies, babysitting her grandchildren.
The last three years of her life, she suffered from a progressive disease called ALS, which greatly altered her physical strength and ability to continue the hard work she was accustomed to.
Mabel will be remembered for her kindness, compassion, selflessness, love and devotion for her family and her tenacious spirit. She will be missed greatly by those who called her wife, mother and grandma.
Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association of Iowa in memory of Mabel Cory.
Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.cedarmemorial.com under obituaries.
