RUTH ANN DORRINGTON
Cedar Rapids
Ruth Ann (Baum) Dorrington slipped into the Lord's arms on May 25, 2015, after suffering a fall.
Ruth was born Feb. 16, 1919, on the family farm in Worthington, Iowa, to Frank and Clara (Ament) Baum. She attended a one-room elementary school and graduated high school from St. Martin's in Cascade. She graduated with honors from Mercy Hospital's Nursing School in Dubuque. Her first job was as an operating room RN for which she was paid less than $100 for one month's work. Her kind, empathetic personality coupled with her unique healing skills was perfect for her long career as a private duty nurse.
While working at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Ruth met her future husband, George Dorrington. George and Ruth married Jan. 30, 1943, and lived in Dubuque, Iowa, Rochester, Minn., and Decorah, Iowa, finally settling in Cedar Rapids, where they raised their three children, Arthur, Debbie and Kevin.
Ruth was the consummate Hawkeye sports fan, loved antiques and could really hit a golf ball. She was an accomplished oil painter.
Ruth was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Clara Baum; her brother, Gerald Baum; and her husband, George Dorrington.
She is survived by her brother, Dr. Cletus (Mary) Baum of Omaha, Neb.; and sister-in-law, Clarabelle Baum of Dyersville. She also is survived by her son, Dr. Arthur (Maureen) Dorrington of Greendale, Wis.; daughter, Debbie (Richard) Ganchan of Reno, Nev.; and son, Kevin (Terri) Dorrington of Cedar Rapids. She was blessed by 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren with four more on the way.
Services will be Saturday, May 30, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, with the Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A visitation will be Saturday, May 30, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
A special thank you to the wonderful Meth-Wick staff, especially the Lynch Wing, Woodlands, for their love and compassionate skill.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Breast Cancer Research Foundation or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
