Mary McCarthy of San Antonio, Texas, formerly
of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2014, after a year-long illness. A rosary service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Teahen Funeral Home, 3100 F Ave. NW, Cedar Rapids, with visitation at 6 p.m. Burial: noon Saturday, April 25, Calvary Cemetery, 375 32nd St. Dr. SE, Cedar Rapids. A memorial service was held Dec. 29 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 7893 N. Grissom, San Antonio, Texas.
Mary is survived by her brothers, Timothy McCarthy (Sandra) of Des Moines and Terence McCarthy (Teresa) of Leesburg, Va.; nephews, Timothy McCarthy (Nell) of San Antonio, Texas, and Timothy McCarthy (Carla) of Des Moines; and nieces, Amy McCarthy of Seguin, Texas, Katherine Blair (Charles) of Mount Carmel, Ind., Patti Graham (Bill) of Des Moines and Denise Junius (Martin) of Des Moines.
Mary McCarthy was born on April 17, 1931, in Racine, Wis. Her parents were Frank and Amy (nee Knospe) McCarthy. She grew up in Cedar Rapids and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1947. She went on to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., and received a master's degree in social work in 1953. Afterward, she worked in several social clinics and churches in the Chicago area where she retired and lived in a senior citizen's home in Batavia, Ill. In the fall of 2012, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, and had been living with her nephew, Timothy, and his wife, Nell.
