SCOTT WHITFORD Cedar Rapids Scott Alan Whitford, 53, passed away at his home in Gilbert, Ariz., on Aug. 31, 2014, surrounded by his family. He fought a courageous battle with brain cancer following that diagnosis in September 2012. Memorial services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, at Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, 2424 42nd St. NE, Cedar Rapids. Scott was born March 9, 1961, son of Don and Wanda (Shaffer) Whitford in Volga, Iowa. The family moved to Robins in 1967. Scott was confirmed in faith through Lovely Lane United Methodist Church, graduated from Kennedy High School, enjoyed sports and motorcycling, attended Kirkwood Community College, served in the Army National Guard and earned his B.S. degree from Mount Mercy College. He was employed in marketing and management positions for several grocery and food establishments, including Dominoes, Sara Lee and Frito Lay. He last served many years with Walgreens in Arizona. Scott and Mary Marr were married in Cedar Rapids in 1989, moved to Arizona in 1993, and became parents of three children. He was devoted to his family through challenging times. Scott had a smile that would light up the room, and a sense of humor that sustained him through stressful times. He loved to be with friends and will be remembered for his encouraging smile and wink. Surviving are his wife, Mary; daughters, Candice and Brandy, and son, Blake, all of Gilbert, Ariz.; his parents, Don and Wanda Whitford of Robins; and siblings, Steve of Robins, David (Tracy) of Marion and Colleen (David) Wirth of western Colorado. Brothers- and sisters-in-law, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends throughout the Midwest and Arizona, will miss Scott.
