Safety Charles Godfrey, who signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons in March, announced his retirement Wednesday after eight NFL seasons.
Godfrey was originally selected by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Iowa, where he played predominantly at cornerback.
He was signed by the Falcons in 2014 and played in five games that season. In 2015, Godfrey played in eight games for Atlanta and recorded 12 total tackles, a forced fumble and one pass defensed.
Godfrey intercepted seven passes in his Iowa career and was named second-team all-Big Ten in 2007.
Iowa's Charles Godfrey (13) deflects a pass intended for Minnesota's Eric Decker during a 2007 game at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. After his career with the Hawkeyes and eight seasons with the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons, Godfrey retired from the NFL on Wednesday, July 27, 2016.
