Carman, Erma M.
Erma M. Carman, 93, of Center Point, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Hiawatha Care Center, Hiawatha. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at the Center Point United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point, and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial: Center Point Cemetery, Center Point.
Survivors include her children, Pat (Dick) Wolff of Waunakee, Wis., Pam (Alan) Denison of Center Point and Barb (Fritz) Gudgeon of Waterloo, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ervin Elgin of Center Point and Marvin Elgin of Cary, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Darlene Elgin of Tipton and Jeanette Elgin of Center Point; and daughter-in-law, Rita Carman of Lake Stevens, Wash.
Erma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David; sons, Jack Carman and Dick Carman; son-in-law, James Morrison; brothers, Lyle Elgin and Robert Elgin; her infant sister, Bernita Elgin; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Elgin and Jeanne Elgin.
Born June 3, 1920, in Center Point, Iowa, Erma was the daughter of Elcy and Beulah (Boyles) Elgin. She graduated from Center Point High School in 1937, received her normal training at Iowa State Teachers College and later attended Kirkwood Community College. She taught in country schools in Linn County. On May 24, 1942, she was united in marriage to David Carman at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She worked at Life Investors in Cedar Rapids for 10 years.
Erma was a member of the Center Point United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the UMW. She was also a member of the Center Point Garden Club, 4-H leader, and substitute teacher in Center Point.
Erma was an avid traveler, vacationing with her grandchildren during the summers, and loved to quilt and read.
