Margaret J. Gardner, 86, of Waterloo, died at Martin Health Center of the Western Home Community on Monday, Nov. 16, 2015.
Margaret was born March 29, 1929, in Fredericksburg, Iowa, the daughter of Leslie and Theresa Justen Shufelt. She graduated from Fredericksburg High School and received a teaching certificate from UNI (Iowa State Teachers College). She married Russell E. Gardner on Sept. 10, 1950, in Fredericksburg. He died Sept. 8, 2014.
Margaret worked as a medical assistant for doctors Albert Dolan and John Moes and for the Black Hawk County medical examiner. She was a 60-year member of First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, served as an elder and member of Presbyterian Women, and served with the presbytery in several capacities. She was a member of Cedar Valley Chapter No. 128 O.E.S., a mother adviser for Rainbow Assembly No. 62. She served as grand deputy for Iowa Rainbow, and was an active member and past president of the Kittrell School PTA.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara (Robert) Priborsky of Port Charlotte, Fla., Linda (Scott) Peters of Shellsburg and Becky Gardner of Cleveland, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Shelle van Niekerk of Cape Coral, Carrie Wibben of Chantilly, Va., Benjamin Wibben of Indiantown, Fla., Sara Davis of Portland, Ore., Tim Davis of St. Louis, Mo., Dan Peters of Austin, Texas, and Dave Peters of Portland, Ore.; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Wibben and Emma Bigus, both of Chantilly, Va., and Isabella van Niekerk of Cape Coral, Fla.; sister, Lois (James) Denner of Waverly; brother, Kenneth Shufelt of Des Moines; and nieces and nephews, Dorinda Gardner of Valencia, Calif., Greg Gardner of Denver, Colo., and Randy Denner and Patty Denner, both of Eldridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband and sons-in-law, Allen R. Davis and Danny M. Lynch.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo.
