Iowa City man dies in crash near Solon

UPDATE: Richard Tobias, 73, of Iowa City, died Sunday night in an accident south of Solon, the Iowa State Patrol said.

Tobias was driving north on Highway 1 about five miles south of Solon shortly after 5:30 p.m. behind a pickup driven by Robert Siddell, 49, of Solon. When Siddell slowed for a farm tractor pulling off the road near the Morse Road intersection, Tobias' car rear-ended Siddell's pickup, went into the west ditch, then came back onto the road, where it collided head-on with a car driven by James Leland, 78, of Solon. Tobias' car then rolled back into the ditch, where it came to rest.

Siddell, Leland, and a passenger in Leland's car, Eileen Leland, 75, of Solon, were all taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Information on their conditions wasn't available Sunday night.
